BUKID: PHILIPPINE SINGLE ORIGIN COFFEE
THE PROBLEM
Packaging for food is a rapidly increasing market. Food needs to be effectively contained to meet health and food supply regulations, but how can we enhance sustainable practices through structural design and material choices? This university brief tasked us with creating a set of packaging designs for a dried food group of our choice, whilst incorporating sustainable pre-press and print production techniques.
THE SOLUTION
I created a series of packaging designs for a speculative artisinal brand called Bukid (meaning ‘mountain’ in Bisaya), which serves sustainable, single-origin coffee beans ethically sourced from the mountain regions of the Philippines. Bukid encapsulates the third wave coffee movement in the Philippines, which places greater emphasis on single-origin coffee with unique flavour profiles and complex roasts. I aimed to create an elevated, high-quality specialty coffee product that entices a new era of coffee consumers through its minimal, typographic design and its commitment to environmental sustainability. The core of Bukid’s visual identity is its uniform design system that comprises an outer container and information cards inserted in the box pockets. The outer container is identical for each coffee varietal, not only reducing financial and environmental costs but also enabling the brand to easily expand to other varietals and develop a cohesive, scalable product line.
Opening the container reveals colour-coordinated information cards that invite the user to appreciate each coffee varietal’s unique origin and complex flavour profile. Finally, to reiterate the brand’s commitment to environmental sustainability, all packaging and information cards are printed on recycled paperstock and encourage proper recycling practices.
