THE PROBLEM
The Australian Centre for International Justice (ACIJ) is an independent, not-for-profit and specialist legal centre that seeks justice and accountability for victims of atrocity crimes and human rights violations. As part of a capstone project supported by UTS Shopfront, we were tasked with designing a suite of social media templates to align the ACIJ’s public presence with their increasing scope and impact, and to build trust with their key audiences, namely victims and survivors, legal professionals, journalists and the broader public.
THE SOLUTION
We developed a brand communications strategy to strengthen the ACIJ’s position as a credible, trustworthy voice in the international justice space in Australia. We designed a series of eight sample Instagram posts that use clear, concise language to resonate with our key audiences. My primary contribution was writing copy for our social media channels and developing a structure for written content to ensure our messaging is anchored in seriousness and clarity. We initially approached this as merely a creative brief, and set out to develop a series of blank social media templates. However, we discovered that the overly technical messaging of the ACIJ’s existing social media communications (pictured above) meant that general and legal audiences alike had little understanding of what the ACIJ does.
We soon realised that the heart of the problem was ultimately how we might communicate who the ACIJ is, what we do, and the importance of our work.
When developing our communications strategy, our approach was heavily informed by the ACIJ’s existing
logo, which resembles passages of redacted text. We brought the logo to life in
new ways by strengthening our important role in revealing the truth by holding governments and
authorities accountable for international crimes.
